10 Key Strategies for Leading Your Team
1. Set the right tone every day. Leaders guide and inspire. To do this you must be consistent and make what you stand for clear. Everybody in your organization should be crystal clear about what is expected of them. There should be no grey areas, mixed messages or doubts coming from your leadership. Lead by example. Live your message, values, principles, and vision yourself every day. This sets the right tone.

2. Hire only the best and be able and willing to make the tough decisions. Leaders know that success is based on who they have on their team and holding each individual accountable for his/her contribution to the team. A leader does not compromise when selecting someone to the team and is courageous when someone is not contributing. They make the tough and right decisions, even when they are not popular.

3. Education is the key. This doesn’t mean that to be a leader you need an MBA or a PhD. What this means is that a leader is always focused on learning and expanding their knowledge.

4. Create a terrific working environment and experience for your team. People are motivated and perform if they appreciate the values, culture and mission of the organization and the team. The focus of the leader is to build the environment where people feel part of the outcome.

5. Be proactive. Leaders are outcome and action focused. They look to the future and “what is next.” They do not settle for “what is.”

6. Give continuous feedback and solicit it yourself. For a leader, every day is about getting better. This is achieved through constructive and honest feedback. Good leaders share feedback and accept feedback about themselves.

7. Value and reward your team. Leaders know they cannot “do it on their own.” They recognize individual and team achievements. They pat people on the back. They share credit.

8. Challenge your team to make a commitment to excellence every day. Team success is based on the contribution of each individual as well as the cohesion as a team. The role of the leader is to help each individual on the team to recognize their own capabilities and capacity and strive for excellence every day.
9. Do not micro manage. Good leaders hire the best people for the job. They trust their employees to deliver their outcomes and give them latitude to act.

10. Have an open door policy. Good leaders are there for their people. They are there as coaches, consultants, sounding boards. Always be available to your people, listen carefully and attentively to what they have to say to you. Allow them to voice their opinions and concerns to you without being threatened.

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES

In keeping with my leadership theme this month:

“Great leaders are the real deal. They know leadership is not a right, it is an honor and awesome responsibility and privilege. Great leaders know when to make the tough decisions, even when they may not be popular, but they always do it with a compassionate heart. Great leaders know that leadership is demonstrated and recognized, not a title to be given.”

The Attitude of Leadership by Keith Harrell
This book lets you see and know your own leadership skills, the author is an expert on attitude and I like his slant and perception related to leadership. The sub title to this book is Taking The Lead and Keeping It….great action focused words. An interesting read.
