An Inspiring Story
One rainy afternoon many years ago, a 15 year old boy sat down at his kitchen table and wrote three words at the top of a yellow pad: “My Life List”. On this list he wrote out some goals. These were not easy or simple goals, they included climbing the world’s major mountains, exploring the longest rivers in the world, piloting the world’s fastest aircraft, running a mile in under five minutes. In total there were 127 goals.

A generation later, as I write this story, this amazing individual, John Goddard, has accomplished 109 of these goals. Goddard mentioned in his own words “that unlike other little boys, most of whom changed their minds about what they wanted to be several times as they grew older, I never wavered from this ambition.”

I found the whole story of this incredible human being very inspiring and his words above so true. I mention a lot in my keynote and seminar programs about, focus, discipline, consistency and never wavering or becoming distracted from the goal whatever that might be as they are the cornerstones for success.

The story got me thinking about my own goals and what I want to do with the remaining time I have on this planet. While how much time we have is not something completely under our control, for me, having read John Goddard’s story, it is about making the most of each day, going deep, challenging myself, risking failure and rejection but sticking with my principles to be the best that I can be. This means recognizing what I am good at and where I am not, and using this to ensure I am not trying to be all things to all people, working on my imperfections (yes, admittedly I have some), and continuing to learn.

Reflecting on my own life, I will share with you 5 of my many personal goals I would still like to accomplish:

1. Visit Australia and New Zealand, ( set for April 2010 )
2. Run my first Marathon (set for September 2010 in Toronto)
3. Climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa ( Date Unknown )
4. Write three more books, ( a work in progress )
5. Be able top spend three months a year by the ocean in a warm climate away from the Canadian winters ( working on it )

What are your personal goals for the future? What do you want to challenge yourself to do?

RECOMMENDED READING
Know-How by Ram Charan

Good thought provoking book giving you the author’s 8 insights on skills that separate people who perform from those who don’t. This is a book to read slowly, savor its thoughts and ideas. As Ron Meyer, president and COO of Universal Studios said after reading this book: “This is the leadership book for the new generation”. It is also one my wife swears by on what leaders need to be able to do.
