Nothing but the Best Will Do

There is a saying in Latin that goes: Nil Satis Nisi Optimum. In English it means “nothing but the best will do”. This resonates with me, and says it all. Here are eight things WINNERS do that they have in common.

  1. You can’t be a winner without belief in yourself and your ability to win. If you do not first and foremost believe in all your heart and soul that you will be a winner, you rarely are. It is about having the right mindedness and thought pattern. Belief determines what you are capable of achieving. It is the first step in the process.
  1. Winners seek out people who are more successful than them, people who challenge them, and make them stretch themselves and their thinking. If you hang out with okay people you will have an okay life. If you hang out and learn from extraordinary people, you will have the opportunity to learn and lead an extraordinary life.
  1. If you are going to do something, do it right and do it brilliantly well. You have heard the saying “a job worth doing, is worth doing well”. Winners recognize this, and do not just do the job, they do it with conviction and passion. They take every opportunity to raise their game and go the extra mile. They plan for success and do not settle for second best. Play to win always, even when you are not on top of your game, give it your best shot.
  1. Winners are not only mentally strong, they are physically strong. They take care of themselves. They work out, watch what they eat, drink lots of water, and live a healthy lifestyle. They take a pride in themselves as well as what they do.
  1. Winners are constantly reading, evolving, and adding to their knowledge. They have a library in their car (audiobooks), office and home. They want to get to the next level. Their personal and professional development is a priority with them. They do not waste their time on minor things that will not expand their knowledge and capability.
  1. Winners have positive attitude. They do not want negative thoughts in their head. Winners do not allow themselves caught up in negativity. They are laser focused.
  1. Winning is not about being liked; it is about being respected and looked up to. If you do not have critics, in my opinion, you are not doing very much with your life. Winners also realize failure is part of the package, an evolution and fact of life. If you are not failing a lot, you can’t be succeeding a lot! Failure and criticism precede winning and success in the arena of business and life.

Winners know the value of time and know it is their greatest commodity. They plan their day, have no problem saying no to the things that are not important, take decisive action when necessary, do not procrastinate, and they execute. They get a good night’s sleep, rise early, and take short power naps and rest breaks during the day. Do not waste time. The clock of life is always ticking. The one thing you can never get back is time.

Be the Best at What Matters Most  By Joe Calloway
In the vein of my article above, thought leader, Joe Calloway, has a great new book out about being excellent at the things that are most important. Although geared to business leaders, entrepreneurs, and those who aspire to lead, there is still a wealth of information, nuggets, and strategies to apply to your personal development too. A good read. The book is well written and thought out, with lots of food for thought.
