7 Ways to Keep On Top of Your Game This Year
1. Define what it is
important to you
Time, they say, is our greatest commodity. I agree with
that. As I say in my best selling book, Success is Not a Spectator Sport, the best way to
optimize the time you have is to define what success means to you. Is it material
gain, financial gain, making a difference in people’s lives, spending more
time with your family, or being successful in your career or business, etc. Whatever is important to you, DEFINE it, then
develop a plan of action to use your time wisely implementing it.
2. Practice “A.T.D.”
(Attention to detail)
To keep ahead of the crowd and be on top of your game at all
times, you must practice A.D.T. I do not mean you have to be obsessive, but
you have to be organized, responsive to people in a timely manner, good at
time management, and aware of the little things and how important they are
to people.
3. Do not take
rejection personally
I am as guilty of this as the next person of sometimes taking
rejection to personally. After all, it is only human nature; we want
everybody to like us, to want to our products or service, and to return our
phone calls and e-mails. Unfortunately it does not work that way. People
only get back to you when it is important to them, not when it is important
to you. Learn to deal with rejection. It is not personal, it’s just
business.
4. Be disciplined
Discipline is the fuel that ignites everything around us. It
is the catalyst for focus, consistency, and commitment. Discipline is about
doing what you say you are going to do and sticking to your goals despite
adversity, and adjusting the plan in a focused way. Most people are not
disciplined; they say they are, but are not. Become truly disciplined in
everything you do, it will definitely fuel your success.
5. Devote yourself
to life long learning
Vidal Sassoon’s, where I learned my craft of hairdressing and
about life many moons ago, had a great saying: “If you think education is
expensive, try ignorance.” Never-never stop learning! Keep reading,
listening to CD’s and watching DVD’s of the masters in your field,
attending seminars and workshops to help you develop in your chosen field,
etc. Devote at least one hour of each day to develop your mind and keep on
investing in your success. Be a sponge, soak it all up. Knowledge is power.
6. Don’t take
yourself to seriously
Learn to lighten up. Give yourself a break. We have a tendency
to take ourselves way, way to seriously, I admit life is not always easy,
but learn to lighten up. Laugh a little more, especially at yourself.
Relieve that stress from your life, improve your health, take the good with
the bad, it evens out in the end. And, for heavens sake, take time to smell
the roses.
7. Success and
Failure
Success may not always be continuous, but by the same token,
failure does not have to be final. Learn to have that resolve to fight and
play the game each day to the best of your ability; to give it everything
you have. There will be great days, with victories and excitement, and
other days, where nothing seems to go right for you. When you think the
world is conspiring against you, learn to fight another day. Each day is a
new opportunity to learn from yesterday.
