How to Have Your Best Year Ever
Reflect
On what is truly important to you, what is working for you, what is not. Be brutally honest with yourself. What would you like to change? How can you do things differently to get you where you want to be?

Acknowledge
The people around you both personally and professionally who have helped you; loved ones, friends, clients. You can never say thank you enough. Don’t send them an email or worse an impersonal text, pick up the phone or send them a hand written note telling them what they mean to you. Say thank you.

Embrace
Technology. Don’t be sacred of it, make it your friend and ally. Be open to new ideas and different ways of thinking. Be innovative; always push yourself. Learning and education is on-going.

Renew
Relationships are golden. Go back in your data base and re-connect with someone you have not done business in awhile or maybe who did not hire you. Find time to reach out to old friends and rekindle the connections.

Plan
Ahead. You cannot move forward without planning. Have a system to track your progress. Have goals in place for what you want to achieve in the year ahead. Plan, prepare and then don’t forget to act.

Focus
The greatest of intentions will not happen without laser focus. Don’t let unnecessary distractions get in the way of progress. Be single-minded in what you want to achieve. Stay focused and don’t let negative people or negative thoughts get in the way.

Commit
There is a quote that says: “commitment eliminates options,” I like that quote, and it is so true. Those of you who have read my book or heard me speak will know commitment is one of my principles of success. Enough said…

Execute
A focus on execution will drive your plans and help you achieve your desired results. Execution is about doing it, taking action; not just talking a good game plan, but having the courage and fortitude to execute on it.

Lastly
Find the time to take care of yourself. Eat well, exercise and rest. Without your health all the rest really does not matter.

RECOMMENDED READING
This month I am going to recommend a movie for a change. One that is near and dear to me for many reasons, but mostly due to the parallel to my personal expereince as a person who stuttered. It is called The King’s Speech.”

It is taking the movie world by storm, nominated for several Golden Globe Awards, and likely up for an Oscar or two. It is based on the true story of King George VI who had to take the throne of England in 1939 after the abdication of his brother. It is the story of King George’s work with a rather unconventional speech expert to overcome his stammering/stuttering and find his true voice and ultimately rally the nation at the time of WW2.

The movie transcends the speed issues and really speaks to the importance of many of the things highlighted in my article above. It is done with much sensitivity and humor. It is also brilliantly acted. It is a powerful movie, a must see in my opinion. For those of you who know me and my history either through this newsletter, hearing me speak, or reading my book, you will understand the extra relevance.

When the movie was released, I was invited by CBC TV Canada to comment on the film and the King’s challenges based on my experience and being seen as an expert from this perspective. This, and having seen the film, has inspired me to do a free teleseminar in April, 2011 about the similarities between the King’s and my story and more importantly how it relates to all of us and overcoming whatever obstacles, challenges or adversity we each are facing in our personal or professional lives. It is applicable to anyone at any level or stage of their life. It is my little gift to you. Please watch for details.
