Hello Charles,

Greetings to you all, and a warm welcome to all our new subscribers from around the world.

I did an unusual thing last week. I decided to take a day off from my work in my office and went to my favorite coffee shop for breakfast, hung out all morning in one of the coolest neighborhoods where I live in
Toronto, just browsing, checking out all the great stores, walking along the boardwalk near Lake Ontario. I had a massage for an hour to relax all my muscles and to de-stress, then I had lunch at what I consider to be the best sushi place in town ( that I am keeping a secret! ). The day went fast, and do you know what? I did not feel guilty. I actually felt invigorated. As “they” say, it was just what the doctor ordered. I tend to be a bit of a workaholic (or so my wife tells me) so this was a gift to myself. It charged me up for the rest of the week, and I am going to make a promise to myself to do it more often. This is one of my New Year resolutions, what are yours?

Here is one for you to think about. Give yourself a little treat this week. If you can’t take off a whole day from work, go somewhere in your lunch hour. If you are a single mum or dad, get a friend or family member to take the kids for you and indulge yourself. What you do doesn’t have to cost you a lot of money. Go for a walk, stroll in your favorite park, get some fresh air, visit your favorite book store, library, mall or art gallery, grab a coffee, tea, smoothie or lunch somewhere. It is okay to pamper yourself. It will make you feel better, it is healthy for you. Treat yourself. You will be glad you did.

Finally, for 2007, we start with something I know I have been anticipating for a long time as part of my continued commitment to serve you better, my redesigned website. It is now up and operational, and I would love your feedback. Take a tour, and let me know what you think: www.cmarcus.com

Have a terrific few months and the best of new years.

Charles

What words do you want to add or remove?

WHAT ARE YOU GRATEFUL FOR?

New Year is a time to reflect and reminisce about the last year and plan for the upcoming year. As we enter 2007, what comes to mind for me is how many people focus on the negative instead of the positive. Life is all gloom and doom to them. They see the glass as half empty instead of half full. If this is sounding a little familiar, at least sometimes, let me share with you an exercise I do myself and with some of my clients in my workshops. It is a powerful yet simple exercise, and shows me that those sometimes negative attitudes that we tend to have can be changed.

Ask yourself the question: What are you grateful for? What excites you? What makes you happy? What makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning and be appreciative for? Make a list and reflect upon it, particularly when you feel those negative thoughts creeping in.

I do this exercise every morning when I wake up, and it has helped to change my life and outlook. Let me share with you 5 personal things that I remind myself I am grateful for each morning.

1. I am grateful for having in my life my wonderful and supportive wife Mary and my two kids Daniel and Rachel. The most important people in the world to me.

2. I am grateful for doing a job that I love to do, having the privilege of being able to meet some of the most incredible people you could imagine all over the world

3. I am grateful for living in
Canada. My fantastic, adopted country which has afforded me so much

4. I am grateful every day that I have learned to control my stuttering disability instead of my disability controlling me and to all the wonderful people especially Andrew Bell who helped me along the way.

5. I am grateful to you, wherever you are in the world, for honoring me by subscribing and reading this newsletter, for choosing me to speak at your important event, for visiting my website, for investing in one of my products, for sending me a message, or for personally introducing yourself to me at an event. They all mean so much to me.

These are my points of gratitude. There are no limits or numbers you can have on your list, and they can change. For me, the ones listed above are important to me and fairly consistent. When I start feeling a bit negative, like when I have had a bad day or have had a bad turn of luck, these remind me that there is always more good out there than bad, and that how you chose to perceive things is what is going to turn the bad day into a good day.

Make a list, check it twice. In fact, check it regularly.
